ASVA Cyanobacteria Strategy

VISION

"Alberta's lakes are managed to ensure they are balanced and healthy, where cyanobacteria does not dominate these environments."

GOALS:

Goal A - Obtain Expert Information

Objectives:
1.  Meet with scientists to obtain expert information on cyanobacteria by June 2013 - including:
   -   What is cyanobacteria?
   -   What are the key factors for cyanobacteria growth and bloom formation?
   -   What can we do to limit growth and prevent blooms?
2.  Compile the factual information on cyanobacteria by August 2013

Goal B - Education and Dissemination of Information

Objectives:
1.  Establish a website page by the end of March 2013 focusing on Cyanobacteria
2.  Meet with Summer Village CAOs to introduce the strategy in April 2013
3.  Engage Summer Village Councillors at the Annual Conference (October 2013) by:
     -   Providing them with Information and best management practices
     -   Provide templates for land use and bylaws
     -   Encourage them to develop action plans for their lake
     -   Get suggestions on how to lobby the government

Goal C - Lobby Government

bjectives:
1.  On behalf of the Summer Villages, the ASVA will lobby government (Provincial and Federal) to address the issues of cyanobacteria.
     -   Work with the GOA to review current legislation and identify inherent shortcomings limiting or impeding the protection of the                     water quality in Alberta Lakes
     -   Work with the GOA to identify relevant policy needs to protect, maintain
